In couples counselling, incorporating counselling with horses offers amazing and unique benefits for couples navigating neurodiversity issues within their relationships. It is, however, a fairly new concept and therapy, so it depends very much on the approach to couples counselling that the counsellor offers. I use a number of different techniques and incorporate the horses at many different points - ask me for further information specifically for your own situation as my aim is to always meet you where you are.
That said, here are the basic ways where horses can help in couples counselling:
Nonverbal Communication: Horses are highly attuned to nonverbal cues and can mirror the emotions and body language of those around them. In couples counseling, interacting with horses provides couples with immediate feedback on their communication styles, helping them become more aware of their nonverbal interactions and how they impact their partner.
Building Trust: Working with horses requires trust-building, as these animals respond to calm and assertive leadership. Couples can learn to trust each other and work collaboratively through horse-related activities, such as grooming, leading, or navigating obstacles together. Building trust with the horse can parallel building trust within the relationship.
Emotional Regulation: Horses are sensitive animals that can pick up on subtle changes in emotional energy. Couples can learn to regulate their emotions and manage conflict more effectively by observing how horses respond to different emotional states. Interacting with horses can provide a safe space for couples to practice emotional regulation skills in real-time.
Mindfulness and Presence: Horses live in the present moment and respond authentically to the energy around them. Couples can practice mindfulness and presence by engaging in activities with horses, such as guided meditation or simply observing the horse's behavior. This can help couples become more attuned to each other's needs and experiences in the present moment.
Relationship Dynamics: Horses thrive in environments with clear boundaries and balanced dynamics. Couples can gain insights into their relationship dynamics by observing how they interact with the horse as individuals and as a couple. Working with horses can highlight patterns of communication, power struggles, or areas where boundaries need to be established or reinforced within the relationship.
Symbolic Reflection: Horses often serve as powerful symbols in therapy, representing strength, freedom, and connection. Couples may project their own relationship dynamics onto the horse, allowing for deeper exploration and reflection on their relationship. Symbolic activities with horses can facilitate meaningful conversations and insights into the couple's relationship dynamics.
Overall,I love the incorporation of horses into couples counselling provides a unique and experiential approach to therapy, offering couples the opportunity to deepen their connection, improve communication, and navigate neurodiversity issues within their relationships in a supportive and nonjudgmental environment.
